in November 2023, Tororo Woman MP Sarah Opendi took to the floor of the parliament and tabled the ‘Alcoholic Drinks Control Bill 2023’ where she sought that the selling of alcohol be regulated.

In the bill, Hon. Sarah Opendi proposed a 10-year jail term or a fine of UGX 20 million to be slapped on anyone selling alcohol before 5 pm and beyond 10 pm on working days.

The bill sought to regulate the manufacture, sale, and consumption of alcoholic drinks, to restore sanity in homes and families that had been torn apart by parents who abused alcohol and neglected their families.

Former State Minister Mariam Matembe has also added her voice to Hon. Sarah Opendi’s and urged the parliament to work on it very fast.

She explains that parents should revise ways of how they should be consuming alcohol and advise parents not to bring alcohol at home.

She also asked the government to empower non-government organizations to sensitize the public about the consumption of alcohol and noted that there should be limits set on the consumption of alcohol.

Hon. Maria Matembe notes that when such serious strides are not considered, the nation is set to face doom as there will be increasing gender-based violence in homes and neglect.
