Sheilah Gashumba opens up about her television experience and why she prefers social media influencing

Media personality and social media influencer Sheilah Gashumba opened up on her decision to step away from television, citing her negative experiences during her time at NBS Television.

Gashumba, known for her presentation work on the evening music show “NBS After 5” alongside Douglas Lwanga, MC Kats, and others, revealed that her frustrations stemmed from the network’s reluctance to feature upcoming musicians.

In a statement shared on her Snapchat, Gashumba recounted how she encountered resistance when advocating for young, talented artists like Joshua Baraka, whom she discovered through her boyfriend, Rickman Manrick.

Despite her efforts to showcase Baraka’s talent, she faced obstacles and had to persistently plead her case to the network executives.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Gashumba expressed her dismay at the lack of support for emerging artists within the television industry.

She emphasized the challenges she faced in trying to persuade the network to embrace fresh talent, only to be met with skepticism and resistance.

“It was the worst experience,” Gashumba lamented. “I had to beg and explain myself repeatedly just to have the opportunity to feature young, new artists. I vividly recall the struggle to get Joshua Baraka on television. It wasn’t until they heard his music that they acknowledged his talent.”

The incident left a lasting impression on Gashumba, prompting her to reevaluate her career path. Despite her success in the television industry, she expressed a clear reluctance to return to that environment, citing the constraints and frustrations she encountered.

In contrast, Gashumba has found a sense of freedom and fulfillment in her work as a social media influencer.

Through platforms like Instagram, Twitter/X, and YouTube, she has been able to connect directly with her audience and champion emerging talent without the bureaucratic hurdles of traditional media outlets. She’s currently pushing for a collaboration between Fik Gaza and Nigeria’s Patoranking.
