INTERVIEW | Meet Juma Wasswa Balunywa: The 22-year-old contesting for MUBS guild president

Who is Juma Wasswa Balunywa? – We answer the question most of you have been asking as the 22-year-old reveals what drives him, his friendship with Judith Heard, and his political ambitions.

Born on 11th September 2001, Juma Wasswa Balunywa a.k.a JWB is a 22-year-old student at Makerere University Business School (MUBS) in Nakawa.

In recent months, he has become a hot topic on social media following his contest for the MUBS Guild President position.

Family Background

Juma Wasswa Balunywa was born and raised by Professor Wasswa Balunywa and Asha Balunywa.

JWB says he picks inspiration from his parents because they are so hard-working. He also yearns to emulate MUBS’ former Guild President Julius Ntende.

How many languages do you speak?

I speak four languages (English, Luganda, Lusoga and Kiswahili).

What are you currently working on? 

I’m currently working on service delivery and making as many friends as possible.

What is your biggest influence factor?

My team; One of the reasons I wake up very early in the morning is because I have a very hardworking and dedicated team behind me that I cannot disappoint.

What has heavily changed about yourself in recent months since your campaigning began?

So much changed but what has HEAVILY changed must be the emotional intelligence I have gained.

Who has supported you on this journey?

My family and friends have supported me so much on this journey.

What do you do to mentally prepare yourself for campaign drives?

I listen to music.

Do you have plans for bigger political ambitions in the future?

Of course, I do.

What is set ahead of you for the future?

I would rather you stay tuned for that.

Judith Heard is the most famous person to slide in my Dms and I think the most memorable thing she’s said to me is “Trust in yourself and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.”

If you could switch closets with someone else, who would it be?

Canary Mugume.

If you had a chance to legalise something illegal in your country, what would it be and why?

If I had a chance to legalise something illegal in my country, it would be driving without a permit just because sometimes the process of acquiring one is hard.
