The Uganda Police leadership has come forward to strongly condemn the utilization of its traffic image in a commercial advertisement promoting “JESA JUS,” a juice brand.
The television advertisement, which has sparked controversy, portrays a scene where a traffic officer, amid a routine inspection, is depicted as being compromised by the offer of a pack of “JESA JUS” from a panicky driver and accompanying children.
The officer, after accepting the juice, is shown allowing the driver and children to proceed without further inspection, stating, “You can go.”
The advertisement has drawn sharp criticism for insinuating that the traffic police are corrupt and easily swayed by bribery in the form of “JESA JUS.” By depicting the driver allegedly bribing the traffic officer with the juice in front of children, the ad casts doubt on law enforcement’s integrity and suggests a disturbing normalization of bribery within society.
Furthermore, the imagery used in the commercial attempts to create a link between the traffic officer, the driver, and the children, portraying them all as participants in illicit behavior.
The police leadership has expressed its dismay at the portrayal of its officers in such a negative light. It has emphasized the importance of upholding the integrity and professionalism of law enforcement agencies. Such misrepresentations, they argue, not only undermine public trust in the police force but also perpetuate harmful stereotypes.
In response to the outcry generated by the advertisement, calls have been made for the withdrawal of the commercial and an apology from the company responsible for its production.
Additionally, there have been discussions about the need for stricter regulations governing the portrayal of law enforcement personnel in advertising, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
