Opposition National Unity Platform President Bobi Wine leaped in defense of his wife, Barbie Itungo Kyagulanyi who recently became a target of trolls on social media over her remarks on President Yoweri Museveni.

The opposition leader says his wife is being targeted because as a woman from western Uganda, she is not expected to speak ill of the people from the same region.

Mrs. Itungo was chastised early this week by a section of social media users for referring to President Museveni as a “thief.”

She said during a NUP conference in Canada, “Museveni is a thief, he has been since the 1980s.”

Itungo went on to reference some of the documented instances including the 1980 elections which propelled President Milton Obote back into office.

When asked about the incident, however, Bobi Wine praised his wife for speaking truth to power.

I am glad that my wife likes to educate herself …whatever she said is true and I can repeat it, that the president is a thief who has never wished anything good for this country,” he said.

I am personally proud to be married to such an intelligent and patriotic lady..and I will defend her with my life.

Bobi Wine noted in an interview with Diaspora Connect that some of the people attacking his wife were surprised that she could speak out sternly against President Museveni.

He added that several other people such as one Frank Ganyana who is based in South Africa, NUP Secretary-General David Rubongoya, and several other people who hail from Ankole have all faced similar attacks every time they came out to speak out against the President.
