Maj Gen Bob Ogiki, the Chief of Joint Staff Policy and Strategy for the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Force (UPDF), hosted a distinguished delegation from the National Defence College of the Bangladesh Armed Forces War College at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) headquarters in Mbuya yesterday. This notable meeting highlighted the dedication of both nations to sharing expertise and best practices in military affairs.
During the discussions, Maj Gen Ogiki emphasized the longstanding ties between Uganda and Bangladesh, which have promoted mutual growth and understanding. “These visits reflect the strength of our relationship,” he stated, stressing the value of learning from one another’s experiences.
Maj Gen Ogiki touched on the similar historical struggles both nations have faced, pointing out that despite encountering different challenges, both countries have a history of overcoming insurgencies and authoritarian regimes. He acknowledged that Bangladesh, having achieved independence nine years before Uganda, has advanced significantly in development and now exceeds Uganda in terms of capacity and GDP.
Nonetheless, Maj Gen Ogiki expressed optimism about Uganda’s future. “There is still hope for Uganda,” he affirmed. “In the coming years, there will be a positive transformation,” he added.
He commended Uganda’s progress over the last 36 years, despite a history of prolonged stagnation. Maj Gen Ogiki encouraged the delegation to engage with Ugandans to better understand the nation’s path and aspirations, affirming, “There is a shared vision among most Ugandans.”
The head of the Bangladeshi delegation, Group Captain B. M Hasan Muhmud, expressed gratitude for the warm reception from the UPDF. He noted that this was their first engagement outside of UN peacekeeping missions and thanked Uganda for being a chosen destination for their educational visit.
Group Captain Muhmud also mentioned that their visit included interactions with other African countries, such as Kenya, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe, with the aim of establishing a “four-sister” relationship to foster greater cooperation among allied forces.
The visit of the National Defence College Bangladesh Armed Forces to Uganda marks a crucial step in deepening the collaboration between the two countries. As both nations continue to exchange knowledge and strategies, the future of military cooperation appears promising.
The meeting was also attended by Brig Gen Abdul Rugumayo, Deputy Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security, and Col Justus Rukundo, Commandant of the Oliver Reginald Tambo Leadership School, along with other senior and junior UPDF officers.
