The year 2024 has been marked by the tragic loss of several prominent Ugandan figures. These individuals left an impact in their respective fields, and their absence will be deeply felt. Here’s a list:
1. Tamale Mirundi Senior
Renowned political analyst Tamale Mirundi Senior passed away in August due to lung-related complications at Kisubi Hospital.
He left behind a legacy and a name that will not be forgotten.
2. Cold Q
In October, comedian Cold Q succumbed to a mysterious illness.
Struggling to afford the Shs 350,000 needed daily for medication, his health deteriorated, leading to his untimely death.
3. Adam Mulwana
The artist behind the 2016 political anthem Toka Kwa Balabala passed away in February after prolonged health struggles.
Mulwana, who had hinted at being poisoned, will be remembered for his impactful contribution to Uganda’s political-music scene.
4. Skillz On Da Beat
Music producer Skillz On Da Beat died in October following a battle with drug addiction.
Known for producing songs for Voltage Music, he had openly discussed his struggles since the COVID-19 lockdown.
5. Bepee
Northern Uganda artist Benard Paul Munu, known as Bepee, died in January in a motorcycle accident.
He tragically lost control of his bike on Lira City-Odokomit Road while attempting to avoid a pedestrian.
6. Baby Deo
Deo Tadeo Mbaziira, known as Baby Deo, died in a car accident in February.
Famous for his song Kawanga Yogera, the 35-year-old musician’s life was cut short while traveling to Nabbingo.
7. Humphrey Mayanja
One of the elder Mayanjas, Humphrey Mayanja, passed away in March after battling cancer.
He had returned from the USA for treatment but succumbed while receiving care at Mulago Hospital.
8. Rebecca Cheptegei
Celebrated distance runner Rebecca Cheptegei died in September following an alleged domestic abuse incident.
At 33, she had represented Uganda at numerous international championships, including her Olympic marathon debut in Paris earlier this year. Her remarkable career highlights include a Ugandan marathon record of 2:22:47 in 2022 and a gold medal at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships.
